The Drama Begins: July Tests Spark the Fire Cricket fans, I suggest you all prepare yourselves. The drama has already begun in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for 2025–27 and if July’s Test matches are any indication, this version of WTC is set to be epic. The WTC points table has been updated, teams have already started to get into WTC mode – some are at full speed ahead and others are a bit bumpy and full of potholes. And the big question that everyone is wondering about: where exactly does Team India stand at the moment?
Let’s review the series, the updated points table and what is surely a defining moment for our Men in Blue.
The WTC: Not a T20 Trophy! If you have just tuned in to the cricketing world or are new to the World Test Championship (WTC), a little refresher here. The WTC is the closest thing to a real league idea for the longest format of the game. All matches have meaning. Each series gives teams the opportunity to climb the table and only the top two teams by mid-2027 will compete in the final!
The unpredictability of the WTC is thrilling! It rewards consistency, away wins, and, of course, victories over the bigger teams. And for fans, it adds a level of drama and urgency to these five-day games which has left us refreshing the points table at the end of every session of play!
India’s WTC Journey So Far Up until this point, here is the summary of India in the WTC 2025–27…
India was off to a great start as they welcomed Sri Lanka in their own backyard just earlier this season. The conditions were more than friendly, and they were able to wipe a hapless Kiwi team aside 2-0, and looked dangerously good while doing it! The tougher challenges lay ahead with not only ways tours, but also a transition with India’s younger players into test cricket.
In July, India engaged Sri Lanka, first facing a narrow two-match Test series throughout Colombo and Galle. The conditions in the series were difficult with rain interruptions and spin-friendly wickets, but India managed to take the series, 1-0.
Yashasvi Jaiswal continues his rampage against a Sri Lankan attack, with a well-assembled unbeaten century score, and Jasprit Bumrah made sure the Lankan middle order didn’t rest easy.
Moreover, that also gave India some badly-needed 12 points that repositioned them back in the table!
Updated WTC 2025–27 Points Table (as of July 2025)
- Australia – 24 Points (PCT: 66.67%) – Top of the table.
- South Africa – 18 Points (PCT: 60%) – Right outside a place in the finals.
- India – 24 Points (PCT: 57.14%) – Coming into the zone after a groggy start.
- England – 20 Points (PCT: 55.55%) – Living up expectations as runners-up in the past edition.
- Pakistan – 12 Points (PCT: 42.85%) – Just a couple of good games away from qualifying.
- Sri Lanka – 4 Points (PCT: 20%) – Have potential but currently struggling.
- New Zealand – 4 Points (PCT: 16.66%) – Can play well but need to kick-start their journey.
- West Indies – 0 Points (PCT: 0%) – Just a batter or bowler away from storming into contention.
- Bangladesh – 0 Points (PCT: 0%) – Another of the unpredictable teams.
Note: Points and PCT changes based on the number of matches (and series) played.
What’s Working for Team India?
- Strength in Batting: Even with Rohit Sharma’s selective game playing, India’s top and middle order has looked solid, especially with the likes of Shubman Gill, Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant (on his roaring comeback).
- Bowling Variety: India’s pace bowling trio of Bumrah, Siraj, and Mukesh Kumar, along with Jadeja and Ashwin offers variety on anything that resembles a pitch.
- Discipline in Away Games: Importance of winning away games, even if by thin margins, is as large difference when finishing jobs. — The Lankan win was the proof.
Issues Needing Attention
- Middle Order Consistency: While the big guns haven’t gone off like cannons frequently, the middle order takes you to that final third so consistency is still worrisome. Some collapses have certainly raised eyebrows.
- Fielding from Catch Drops: You know it, we both know it, yes, a couple of sitters got dropped that handed us an early win in earlier games. Is that fixable? Yes. Costly? Very.
- Injury Bas and Care Chart Damage Control: Abandoned as low volume thrown ‘Browsed’ world cup players like KL Rahul and Shami gareth recovery recovering India need to manage players and their work load.
Who’s Hot in the Squad Right Now?
- Jaiswal – The reliable old scooter of the team – nothing flash but always gets the job done!
- Bumrah – Man is bowling how he did in 2019. Don’t blink when he bowls his overs!
- Pant – The man comes back from injury and shows every one of us why he is still the most exciting wicketkeeper-batsman in the game.
What’s Next for India? India goes to South Africa next, for a three-match Test Series starting in September. The three Tests could make or break their WTC campaign. In the history of India’s tour of South Africa, they are not great in South African conditions, but a win in South Africa would send shivers down the spines of others on the WTC table.
They also host Bangladesh later in the year – which, let’s be honest, we should all be hoping for a clean sweep (touch wood).
Personal Experience: Why I am Loving this WTC Cycle Honestly, WTC games have taken me back to being a child on Sunday mornings glued to the TV with my dad, kettling with chai, yelling at edges that weren’t caught. There is a certain beauty about Test cricket again – from my perspective, every session of every Test match seems to matter. It reminds me that the sport we love isn’t about just fours and sixes, it’s about having patience.
In Conclusion India is heading in the right direction, but with difficult gradients ahead. However, with youth, experience and hunger, you shouldn’t rule them out. After all, we have been in two WTC finals. Can it be third time lucky?
